What Acetyl L-Carnitine Actually Does

Every cell in your body runs on ATP — adenosine triphosphate, the molecule that powers everything from muscle contractions to brain function. Fatty acids are one of the primary fuels used to produce ATP, but they can't cross the mitochondrial membrane on their own. That's where carnitine comes in — it's the transporter that carries fatty acids through the membrane to be oxidised for energy. Without carnitine, fat oxidation can't occur at its normal rate, regardless of how much fat is available.
