ATP Science Beta Alanine — Pure Carnosine Precursor for Endurance and Fatigue Resistance
Beta-alanine does one thing exceptionally well — it raises muscle carnosine levels more effectively than taking carnosine directly. Higher muscle carnosine means better buffering of exercise-induced acidity, delayed fatigue onset and improved endurance through high-intensity efforts. 100% pure beta-alanine, 208 serves per 250g tub at 1.2g per serve, gluten-free, produced at ATP Science's Brisbane facility. In stock now at Pro Supplement.
Who It Suits
Beta-alanine's benefits are most pronounced in activities involving repeated or prolonged high-intensity efforts — resistance training, CrossFit, cycling, rowing, sprinting, team sports and any training where the burning sensation of lactic acid is a regular limiting factor. Research consistently shows 2.5–4g daily over 4+ weeks produces meaningful improvements in muscle carnosine and high-intensity endurance. ATP Science's 1.2g serving is designed to be taken per session — multiple sessions per day or a second serve on heavier days can be stacked to reach higher daily totals.
The Science — Why Carnosine and Why Beta-Alanine?
During high-intensity exercise, your body shifts toward anaerobic ATP production from glucose. A by-product of this process is hydrogen ion accumulation — the acidity that causes the burning sensation in your muscles and eventually forces you to slow down or stop. This is exercise-induced metabolic acidosis, and it's one of the primary limiters of high-intensity performance.
Carnosine is a dipeptide stored in muscle tissue that acts as an intramuscular buffer — it absorbs hydrogen ions and reduces the acidity effect. More carnosine means more buffering capacity, less fatigue, and more capacity for high-intensity work. The problem: supplementing carnosine directly is poorly absorbed. Beta-alanine is the rate-limiting precursor to muscle carnosine synthesis — supplementing it is the most effective way to raise muscle carnosine levels.
What Muscle Carnosine Does
- Intramuscular acid buffer — absorbs hydrogen ions produced during anaerobic exercise, delaying the fatigue response.
- Antioxidant activity — carnosine is a naturally occurring intramuscular antioxidant that reduces oxidative stress from training.
- Calcium regulation — aids in regulating calcium transients in skeletal muscle, supporting muscle contraction efficiency and sensitivity.
- Neuromuscular junction support — involved in the signalling processes that trigger muscle contractions.
- Anti-glycation — carnosine protects against glycation, the process where sugars bind to proteins and cause damage to muscles, collagen and connective tissue.
Stacking With Creatine
Beta-alanine and creatine are one of the most well-researched supplement stacks in sports science. They address different energy systems — creatine supports the phosphocreatine system for explosive short-burst efforts, beta-alanine buffers acidity for repeated or sustained high-intensity work. Research shows the combination produces significantly greater improvements in high-intensity endurance than either supplement alone. Stack with ATP Science Creapure® Creatine for the combined effect. Can also be added directly to Pre Plus pre workout if it's not already included in your pre workout formula.
How to Use It
Mix 1.2g (approximately one third of a scoop) into 50–200ml of water or your pre workout drink. Take 30–45 minutes before training. Can also be taken during training. Daily consistent use over 4+ weeks is where carnosine accumulation produces meaningful performance changes — single-dose use without consistent supplementation has limited effect.
